Communion Chalice - Its History and Significance

Communion Chalice - Its History and Significance

By Chris Bradley

Many people are quite familiar with the communion chalice, but most have no idea why it is important in the Christian faith as well as it's meaning.

The chalice is also more commonly known as the communion cup. It is considered to be one of the most popular among the sacred vessels. Essentially, a chalice is used in most Christian ceremonies and masses as a cup that holds the wine.

Some of the churches that use this vessel include Catholics, Eastern Orthodox churches, Anglicans, Lutherans and other Christian sects.

Most of the time, a chalice is made from either gold or silver and decorated in various stones. Back in the day, the gold goblet was something that symbolized family.

Moreover, the chalices back then looked like a goblet with two handles at either side. Throughout the centuries, however, the look of the chalice has changed although its main significance remained the same.

The chalice as a vessel was treated with great reverence and often kept in a sacred place. Most of the time, when people hear of the word chalice or communion cup they automatically think 'holy grail' or the cup that Christ used in the Last Supper.

This came about when pilgrims back in the 6th and 7th century believed that there was a sect that still held the original cup that Christ used. However, this turned out to be unfounded.

Nevertheless, it showed just how important the cup was and how far those who believe in the Christian faith would go for it.

The communion chalice is one of the most important vessel used in many Christian ceremonies. You can find plenty of types of chalices and their uses depending on the church denomination or religion that's using them.

The design is different for each church that used them as well. For instance, in western Christianity the cups had a small node where the stem met the cup. This allowed the cup to be easily picked up.

In Catholicism, before the Vatican II, the cups were created with a tulip shape and were generally quite slim since only the priests were the only ones that used them.

Today, however, all people who are to take communion can drink from the chalice or any form of cup to also partake of the blood of Christ.

On the other hand, in Eastern Christianity, which includes the Orthodox churches; the chalices were often decorated with icons and even the cross. All of the people that took the communion were also able to drink from the chalice itself.

As you can see, the chalice has had many facets and even today, variations of its looks are still present.

These cups are still seen as an important part of the sacrament and the faith. They are essentially used to symbolically hold the blood of Christ.

The sanctity is still being revered and in fact, in the Catholic Church, whenever the communion chalice is used, it is actually blessed first and anointed.

Are Earthquakes a Sign of the End of Time?

Are Earthquakes a Sign of the End of Time?

By Pamela Bunta

Earthquakes are on our minds these days as we see the results of two very devastating and recent earthquakes on the news. There is alot of seismic activity going on these days. Yes, there have always been lots of earthquakes, but there appear to be more recently, they have been very close together and severe.

The Bible speaks of earthquakes happening in diverse, (different), places when the end of time is approaching. It has many other warnings also, but specifically, it speaks of earthquakes. Matthew 24:7, Mark 13:8, and Luke 21:11, to be specific, are passages in the Bible that speak of earthquakes in reference to the end of time.

Luke 21:11, clearly says there will be great earthquakes, famines, and pestilences, in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.

Many people and religions believe this to be true. I certainly do, and the proof to us is there are many things happening today that were foretold long ago in the scriptures of the Bible. To me, that makes it very believable!

The earth is a moving, shaking, planet. It is interesting to study the seismic activity of today. I live in a major earthquake zone, the New Madrid Faultline. I certainly am aware of the possibility of an earthquake in my area of the country.

Since the horrors we have seen in Haiti and Chile of the devastation and calamity of earthquakes, I think more people want to be aware of the possibilities of future events. The news medias are frantically asking the scientific neighborhood if they can give the predictions of earthquakes. With the modern technology at hand the is no specific predictions of exactly where an earthquake will happen next, only guesstimates.

Although earthquake predicting is not an exact science. We can all be prepared in the event that an earthquake may happen where we live. That is the best we can do. We can also reach out to others who are experiencing the devastation of an earthquake.

The Bible tells us what to expect when we are approaching the end of time as we know it. I am glad that God has given us such a guide to follow and is merciful to help us in times like these.

We can prepare both spiritually and physically for the times of catastrophes, such as earthquakes. We all may have to experience difficult times ahead. God doesn't say we will escape all troubles or calamities, but He does say He will be there for us and help us through them.

I encourage you to read the Bible and learn what God says about future events, such as earthquakes, that will happen as the end of time approaches. Yes, earthquakes in different places are a sign of the end of times.

Without Faith, it is Impossible to Please God

The Bible says, "Without faith, it is impossible to please God, for he who comes to God must believe that He is God, and a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him" (Hebrews 11:6).

Therefore, expectation is the key to receiving from God when you pray. Jesus said in Mark 11:24, "Whatsoever things you desire when you pray, believe you receive them and you shall have them."

Believe you receive when you pray! What good does it do to pray without expecting to receive? You might as well not pray at all, for faith is required to receiving what you desire.

Surely, God will do His part when we pray, but we must also do our part. Our part is simply to believe. So many people are busy asking God, but never really believing what they are praying for will come to pass. You can tell by the way they talk, or act.

Most people have been raised to not believe in a positive outcome concerning anything, and actually, taught to believe in a negative outcome. It's a safety mechanism that says, "Don't get your hopes up, so if it doesn't work out, you won't be disappointed."

There's no logic in that because you will be disappointed anyway. Now, it's normal to feel disappointment. It's what you do with the feelings of disappointment that's important, but that's another subject.

Believing in a positive outcome is vital to our success. If we could only believe that God has our best interest in mind and simply trust that everything will work out, we would see great results. Life would change in ways we'd never thought possible. But, most people just can't believe things will workout for them. They look at past results and judge their future based on their past.

It's a fact that the best predictor of future behavior, is past behavior. The good news is, that your behavior is a choice. Your past does not have to equal your future! Just change your expectations and have faith.

James 2:20 tells us that "Faith without works is dead," which means "faith" is an action word. The word "faith" in Webster's Dictionary is also translated as "belief." So, believing is an action. And, it really doesn't take any more effort to believe, than to not believe. It's just an attitude.

It's been said that if you truly believe in something (having faith that it will happen), then it really will happen. A lot of people don't completely accept that, but the Bible is clear; what you believe is what you get. Jesus said in Matthew 9:29, "According to your faith, let it be done unto you."

He didn't say we would see the manifestation of our prayers immediately. We must keep believing and not waver, "For a man who wavers is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. Let not that man think that he shall receive anything of the Lord" (James 1:6-7).

Expectation is the key to receiving from God when you pray! If you are not going to expect God to act, then don't pray at all. It's ineffective and displeases Him when you don't believe. Remember, Hebrews 11:6 says, "Without faith, it is impossible to please God."

God will do His part when you pray, but only if, you do your part, and that is simply to believe.
